AFRO PUNK: THE MOVIE THAT SPARKED A MOVEMENT

January 24, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Join GIBFF as we kick off our 2019 Mobile ArtHouse monthly film and discussion series. Doors at 6pm with food, libation, spoken word and the award winning AFRO-PUNK.

The Afro-Punk movement came long before the annual festival. This is the movie that started it all.

Afro-Punk focuses on the lives of four African Americans dedicated to the punk rock lifestyle, interspersed with interviews from a chorus of over 80 black punks from throughout the United States.

The film raises questions around black identity, interracial dating, marginalization, the double consciousness of black Americans, and alienation. It’s also a time capsule for what black alternative youth experienced just as the world was beginning to shift with the power of the internet.

Director James Spooner will be on hand for the Q & A following the film.
